Tchaikovsky Overture 1812

The BPO season began with a programme of Russian melodies and ends in the same vein but perhaps just a little louder. Glinka based his opera Russlan and Ludmilla on a charming but satirical fairy tale by Pushkin. Orkney Wedding with Sunrise is a musical depiction of a boozy and jubilant party on the Isle of Hoy. Dukas invokes the ultimate punishment on a lazy apprentice based on the poem by Goethe, and the season comes to a thundering climax in the most famous of overtures. For the other work? Well it's up to you. Nominations of your choice in the Autumn, voting over Christmas and the New Year and the most popular played in March. Vote at www.brightonphil.org
